A retreat seemed in order, so Almanzo and Laura packed their few belongings and set off with Rose for his parents’ farm in Spring Valley, Minnesota, to recuperate body and spirit. During this brief interlude, they considered emigrating to New Zealand, a farther shore—they had some experience raising sheep after all—but soon another opportunity arose.
